Card Printing System for BER Airport

Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BER) receives a large number of people every day: employees, service providers, technicians, suppliers, and many more. For security reasons, all persons on the airport premises must be clearly identified. Some must also undergo access control to enter secure zones. Ideally, each person should be issued an ID card upon arrival.

Depending on the person’s function, a different ID card is required: a card with simple graphic personalization or an ID card with access control. Furthermore, the lifespan of these cards is limited.

The airport was looking for an all-in-one printing system that could issue instantly rewritable ID cards with graphic personalization and coding options for access control.

To meet its requirements, the airport opted for rewritable cards and the Evolis Tattoo Rewrite card printer.

Thanks to the installation of several dozen Tattoo Rewrite printers, the airport can now print three types of ID cards quickly and easily. These include unencoded visitor badges with simple graphic personalization. Visitor badges with graphic personalization and an encoded chip allow access to certain restricted areas. A third option is to reprint employee ID cards for staff, which serve as a replacement for a lost, forgotten, or damaged original ID card.

In all three cases, these are temporary ID cards and are not intended for long-term use. Thanks to rewrite technology, the ID cards can be rewritten. The cards can be printed, erased, and reprinted. In this way, the airport realizes savings in card printing and avoids waste, thus reducing the overall printing costs for ID cards intended for short-term use.
